Ar Double Barrel - Gilboa has announced that it will begin full production of its double-barreled AR-15, the Snake, here in the United States. This rifle was developed in Israel as part of a series of AR variants under the Gilboa brand. When a pair of 16″ barrels are attached, this double trigger shotgun is legal for civilian use without a tax stamp.

The idea of ​​a double-barreled rifle is not new. Similar prototype guns were built in the 1950s and 1960s to fire multiple bullets simultaneously or in rapid bursts known as "volley fire". The civilian variant has a pair of separate and independent gas blocks and pipes. Instead, a separate trigger is required to fire each barrel, just like a double-barreled shotgun. The Select-Fire version, however, has a single trigger.

Both versions have separate ejection ports that eject spent brass on the right and left sides of the rifle. In both variants, two separate magazines or a magazine coupler are fed under the rifle.

Three Picatinny or Keymod rails can support a variety of optics and other accessories on and around the twin barrels.

While the SAS certainly doesn't use a double-barreled AR variant, the weapon does exist. The Gilboa snake is a very real weapon. Gilboa, an Israeli firearms manufacturer, began producing the Snake several years ago. Gilboa's parent company, Silver Shadow, produces a number of firearms for military and police use.

It is a fairly new firearm that uses two barrels and feeds from two magazines. The 5.56 chambered and the overall layout is quite modern. The upper and lower receivers are predictably flared and the guns weigh 12 pounds empty. By comparison, the M249 SAW weighs 17 kg unloaded.

Shotguns come in different barrel lengths. The 16-inch barrel was announced in the US market. However, Gilboa's website indicates that a short 11.5-inch barrel configuration is also available. It is claimed that the barrels can be adjusted via independent adjusting screws. The barrel adjustment allows both barrels to hit the same spot, or at least close enough.

Single barrel is great, so why doesn't SAS want dual pressure technology right away? Because it's stupid, complicated and expensive. In a firefight, the ability to distribute lead quickly is valuable, but an experienced shot can easily fire two well-placed rounds in well under half a second. If you really need a quick ammo charge, there is a fully automatic setting.

When two shots are fired, you experience double recoil and spend double ammo. Instead of missing one shot, you miss two. The cost of double recoil means slower recovery. Plus, 12 pounds for a rifle is completely ridiculous, and you have to factor in the need to carry extra ammo to accommodate the fact that it fires two rounds at once.

In a world where ounces equal pounds, a 12-pounder would be better as a sniper rifle capable of long-range shooting. A double-barreled shotgun is a no-brainer for military operations, and outside of the sporting world, a no-brainer for most things.

Gilboa is neat but not practical. I give Gilboa and Silver Shadow credit for building a neat rifle. From an engineering point of view, it is completely fascinating. I would like to shoot someone on the range, but I would never do it on duty, home defense, or hunting, or really anything outside the field of fun.
