In 1822, an Egyptian army of around 10,000 men under Hasan Pasha landed on Suda to defeat the Cretan Revolution of 1821.
After the Cretan Revolution of 1866-69, the Ottomans built the fortresses of Aptera (Aptera Castle) and Kalami (Izzeddin Castle), barracks, a military hospital and a naval base.
