South Carolina Military Bases - Richmond, Va. (AP) - The Navy is moving men and ships ahead of Hurricane Florence, and the Air Force and Army are flying advanced aircraft elsewhere as protection. The few surviving fleets, meanwhile, are pushing hard.

Florence heads a region that is home to some of the country's most notable military bases, including Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island in South Carolina.

Although thousands of Marines and their families have fled Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, there is no mandatory evacuation. The commanding general said Tuesday that anyone remaining at the base will have food, water and shelter, despite the storm's projected path.

America's Largest Military Bases

"Since 1941, this base and its Marines have been positioned to meet crises at home and abroad, and Hurricane Florence was no exception," said a message from Brig. General Julian D. Alford.

Several military families and others visited the Camp Lejeune Facebook page, venting their fears and questioning the base's plans.

Non-essential personnel were relieved of duty at Lejeune and indicated that they were free to move with their families to locations within 500 miles (800 kilometers) of Jacksonville.

Nat Fahy, a spokesman for the command, said the base is a safe place for anyone not evacuated. Shelters at the base are expected to open Wednesday morning, and there are full resources for those seeking shelter in place, he said.

Of the roughly 40,000 active-duty troops at Lejeune, about three-quarters live on base. Fahy doesn't know how many are left at the base.

Colin Richards, a Navy diver at the Little Creek-Fort Story Joint Expeditionary Base in Virginia Beach, was among the military personnel who evacuated before Hurricane Florence. A 28-year-old man is very worried about his 1-month-old daughter.

Recruits were set to leave the Marine Corps' largest training installation on the East Coast on Tuesday, but those plans changed after South Carolina's governor rescinded an evacuation order because the storm's projected path changed.

Some non-essential personnel and families were evacuated, but most of the 8,000 Marines and support personnel remained based on Parris Island.

Things You Didn't Know About Fort Jackson, South Carolina

At Fort Bragg, an outback Army base in North Carolina, only mission and emergency personnel are required to report for work on Thursday and Friday, officials said, and urged service members to contact their commanders for guidance. Most of the 82nd Airborne Division's helicopter fleet is being relocated to one of two locations in Georgia, officials told The Fayetteville Observer earlier this week.

In Virginia, Navy officials issued an emergency evacuation order Tuesday for active duty and civilian personnel, their families and reservists living in certain coastal areas that the state has ordered to evacuate.

The move came after the Navy began sending dozens of Virginia-based ships out to sea earlier in the day. The last two ships — the hospital ship USNS Comfort and the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln — departed Naval Station Norfolk on Tuesday, according to the Navy. More than 30 ships have now moved to safer waters in the Atlantic Ocean.

Officials at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton said the base's F-22 Raptors and T-38 Talon training jets will begin flying to Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in central Ohio on Tuesday. Soldiers sent to these bases typically go through Basic Combat Training (BCT) or complete some level of advanced training. Graduation is also a big deal here at Fort Jackson, the Army's main training center for recruits.

You may also find out some random facts about your new basic military training location. Along with all the knowledge you gain during training, it is nice to know that you are one of the thousands of people who are training at the largest and most active early entry training center in the country.

Originally established in 1917, Camp Jackson was the starting point of training for the men of the 30th and 81st Infantry Divisions. Later, it became a camp and training area for the South Carolina National Guard until the 1940s.

The camp became a permanent army garrison in 1940 and was later given its current name of Fort Jackson. In the early 70s, Fort Jackson was occupied by the U.S. Considered as a military training center. And continues to grow to what it is today.

Today, it is an advanced training campus that includes the US Army Soldier Support Institute, the Department of Defense Chapel School and Center, and the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment.

When you're in BCT, you don't get much chance to explore the base. But if you're here for advanced training and live near or on base, you can access many services and resources, including:

You may or may not use any or all of these services while on base, but if you do it's good to know what's available!

Fort Jackson is huge. If it's your first time here — especially if you're reporting as a regular soldier — you'll want to know the basic rules and regulations for entering and exiting the base. If you are a visitor, you need to know where to check-in for the Fort Jackson graduation ceremony. Ask for details at the gate!

When you arrive, you must check-in. This means that regardless of rank, permanent party soldiers must check in with the Fort Jackson Welcome Center, located at the Fort Jackson Inn at 7550 Benning Road.

The building is open 24/7 to assist new soldiers arriving on base. Call 803-782-9802 with questions about check-in.

Whether you're new to Fort Jackson or returning for training, it's good to get updates on what's in stock or what may have changed. Newcomer Orientation is held on the first Wednesday of each month at the NCO Club, 5700 Lee Road.

This is a great event for spouses and service members to come together to learn more about the command and service. The orientation is about 2 hours, so plan accordingly. Call Army Community Services (ACS) with questions at 803-751-5256.

Even if you're only there for the BCT, be sure to explore the base after passing through. It looks totally different when you're not doing hardcore PT while getting scolded! And, if you live here with family, take advantage of the community services and resources available.

At more than 52,000 acres, including 1,160 buildings, there are plenty of places to see and do around Fort Jackson. Try and explore as much as you can before you move on to the next duty station because you never know if you'll ever get a chance to return to this historic site again.
