Anne Appelbaum Twitter - (born July 25, 1964) is an American journalist and historian. She has written extensively on the history of communism and the development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe.
She graduated from Sidwell Freeds School (1982). Applebaum received a bachelor's degree in history and literature from Yale University, with honors.

Applebaum has been writing about Russia since the early 1990s. In 2000, she described the connections between Russia's new president, Vladimir Putin, and former Soviet leader Yuri Andropov and the former KGB.
In 2008, she began talking about "Putinism" as an anti-democratic ideology, even though most at the time still considered the Russian president a pro-Western pragmatist.
