M65 Submachine Assault Gun - The realistic-looking weapon was handed over to Lancashire Police as part of an amnesty which also saw the handing over of shotguns, pistols, air rifles and ammunition. The amnesty, which ends on Sunday, allows people to turn in guns without a license without being prosecuted for their possession. They can also do it anonymously.
An Uzi-style BB gun was one of those weapons handed in, and although it could only be used to fire BB balls, police warned that such items could be used to scare and intimidate people. A spokesman said: "We certainly did a double take or two when the 'Uzi' in this first image was handed in as part of our county's firearms drive. Fortunately, it turned out very quickly that it was a plastic BB gun.

"However, it could still be used to threaten people and cause fear in our communities, so we are very pleased that it is now off the streets! It is one of around 85 items handed in since the surrender began, with the name on key #OpAztec, earlier this month.

"Other items being handed in are shotguns, pistols, air rifles and ammunition - see additional images in this post. We now want to remind you that we have reached the end of the surrender, which ends on Sunday (May 29).
"Remember that although you can surrender unwanted firearms and ammunition at any time, you will not be prosecuted for illegal possession at the point of surrender during the surrender period and may remain anonymous. However, the history of each actual firearm will be reviewed to determine its use in criminal activities.

Chloe Smith, who goes by Chloe Mediumship, has had excellent readings from Mary Fitzgerald, Amy Childs, and Kelsey Parke. We have a reprinted article on the Argentinian Halcon SMG written today by Ronaldo Olive, originally published on Gun Tests in the early 90's. They are pretty hard guns to find information on (especially for us
) and Ronaldo did a great job explaining the different models and their evolution - thanks Ronaldo!
Countless nations around the world, of course, have submachine guns in the inventories of their respective military and police forces. But not so many can boast of weapons of truly indigenous design and manufacture. Among the least known of this group is the South American country Argentina.
Centrefire Self Loading Machine Pistol
It's a safe bet that the mention of Argentina might make the casual reader think of tender meat or glamorous tango dancing, as opposed to guns in general, let alone machine guns. However, for the past half century or so, the Argentines have not only been designing, but actually manufacturing submachine guns for their own use.
It all started in 1930 when Juan Lehnar assembled the first SMG to be invented in this part of the world. It was a selective fire weapon that used 9mm Parabellum ammunition fed from a curved magazine on the left side of the slide (the magazine could be raised to make the weapon flatter for transport). The metal stock could be rotated forward, reducing the weapon's length from 700mm/27.5″ to 290mm/11.75″, and the wooden stock could be moved to lie flat under the case front. A single prototype was built.
It was a full decade before things picked up again. In 1941, the Fábrica de Armas Halcón was created in Buenos Aires to develop a series of small arms projects, including submachine guns. They varied greatly in appearance, but were generally called Halcóns (Hawks).
The first was the Model 1943 in .45 ACP, used for a long time by the "National Gendarmerie" (National Police). Its appearance was definitely unmistakable, mainly thanks to the rifled and fully rifled barrel with a massive muzzle compensator. Feeding was done through direct box magazines with a capacity of 17 or 30 cartridges, which were inserted into a box that acted as a forend. The fire selector was a push-button type button located directly above the trigger, and operated the same as the British STEN (pressed from the left side, fire was semi-automatic; fully automatic was the opposite).

Another variant was the Model 1946, of the same caliber, which was known as "Model Aeronautica" to refer to its intended use. Although the action is practically unchanged from the previous version, several modifications can be found: a folding metal stock (which allows the overall length to be reduced from 790 mm / 31″ to 520 mm / 20″), a shorter barrel ( of 292mm/11″ to 152mm/5.75″) with a simplified compensator, adding a rear pistol grip and removing the custom front grip (the magazine itself was used as such).
The change to the 9mm Parabellum caliber was one of the features that distinguished the Model 49 or "Modelo Ejercito Argentino" (Argentine Army Model), which returned to the previous wooden configuration. A curved 36-round magazine was introduced and its holster/foregrip was widened at the bottom for easier loading. Apart from other small changes, the Falcon retained other strange, but definitely unwanted features: it was still too complicated and expensive to manufacture, as well as bulky.
In the mid-1950s, the company's designers decided to deviate from the concepts of the previous generation and embark on a program to develop a simplified weapon, that is, functional and cheap to manufacture. The result was the "Modelo Liviano 57" (Light Model 57), a far cry from the previous Falcons in appearance.
It was lighter, with an empty weight of 3.25 kg (7.26 lb) compared to 4.75 kg (10.5 lb) of the Model 1943 and 4 kg (9 lb) of the Model 1946. The gun made a extensive use of sheet metal stamping techniques, being little more than a long metal tube with a pistol grip assembly (where the firing mechanism was located) and a curved 40-round magazine cover attached to it. At the opposite ends was a 225mm long (8.85") barrel and an extremely spartan metal stock that could be rotated up and forward to lie flat on the left side of the holster (length reduction: 780mm/31 " to 535 mm/ 20" ).

The earlier model's safety (the lever on the left side above the trigger) has given way to a notch in the rear of the cocking piece slot, into which the handle engages when the bolt is pulled. There was apparently no way to lock the bolt in the forward position, which posed some danger to a simple recoil-operated machine gun. On the left side of the pistol grip was the fire selector lever, whose corresponding panel was shaped to allow the lever to rotate.
Another variant was the "Lightweight Model 60", which dropped the fire selector lever and used a double trigger arrangement where the front trigger gave semi-automatic fire and the rear trigger was for full trigger. In other respects the two Light Models were twins.
Unconfirmed estimates are that no more than 10,000 of these Falcons were produced in total. It should also be noted that several prototype weapons have been built over the years, and so they had
