While there are many small guns I love, their trade-offs in versatility have always pushed me back to larger guns. With the Hellcat, these common trade-offs seem to have disappeared.

Let's get into what I consider to be the best CCW 9mm pistol and where I think the Hellcat stacks up against the big guns.
For a change, all I wanted was to find a gun that had all the features of a big gun, but was small enough to carry comfortably.
It was always basic physics that seemed to get in the way. That is, until now. It seems to be a gun that just might offer the best of both worlds – full size and CCW ready dimensions.

A Look At Springfield Armory's Sa 35
The Hellcat is the new CCW pistol from Springfield Armory. Chambered in 9mm, the new pistol packs 11+1 rounds in the flush magazine and even more in the included mag.
While I know there are a lot of .45 ACP and 10mm fans out there, I think most people would agree that the 9mm is a powerful defensive cartridge. With today's armor I feel it is strong enough to handle any bipedal beast.
The development of this ostensibly pistol-folding compact pistol was, in the words of Springfield Armory CEO Dennis Reese, "shaped with one mission in mind - to deliver the ultimate concealed carry pistol."

While the microcompact semi-auto pistol market is full of options, the new +P-rated Hellcat stands out with some unique features. But first let's discuss the size so you can understand how small it is.
The gun weighs 18 oz., has a short 3" barrel and is only 1" wide. But inside this tiny little gun it has an incredible capacity of 11 rounds in the patented magazine - and that throws it up to 13 + 1 with an extended magazine. Springfield describes it as "the world's most advanced microcompact" and I couldn't see any way to deny that.

In addition to its impressive power, the Hellcat can also accept micro red dots such as the Shield RMSc and JP Enterprises JPoint.

While the gun is offered in standard form with metal sights, the OSP version has a removable cover plate and the ability to mount optics directly to the slide. As a result, the optic sits low enough to allow connection testers with a red dot.
Hellcat's U-Dot sights are designed to be proven through sights like this Shield RMSc on the OSP version of the gun.
Prices for both types? The standard has an MSRP of $560, and the OSP model raises the price just $30 to $599.
Speaking of metal sights, both versions come standard with Springfield's U-Dot sights, which feature a deep U-shaped notch on the back—with a "tactical stand" for a handheld bicycle slide—that connects to the tritium dot on the front. surrounded by a shining ring.

The OSP version of the Hellcat has a removable cover for the optical mount on top of the slide.
Sport spirals front and back, with the rear winding over the slide, both on the scale and also on the cover plate of the OSP model.
While we're discussing the slide, it's important to mention that the hammer-finished barrel is Melonite coated inside and out for corrosion protection and increased durability.
The loaded chamber indicator consists of a hole "witness" at the top of the slide / barrel, and in front of the full grid rod has a "stand-off device" designed to protect the gun from the outside. battery when the tip is pushed up to the target.

As for the frame, the Hellcat has a lot of good additions. It features Springfield's "Adaptive Grip Texture", a design with a detailed pattern of short and long pyramid shapes designed to combine comfort against the body with a secure grip in the hand.
It achieves this through an alternating pattern of surfaces on long pyramids for comfort and points on short handles.
The undercut trigger guard and high hand grip keep the gun low in the hand, and the reversible mag release is kind to all of us southerners out there. A short strip of standard rail on the dust cover surrounds the package.
Anyone familiar with the XD line of pistols might be wondering if the Hellcat is a new addition to the XD line. It's not, but it's a better new design for Springfield Armory.

Contributing significantly to this difference is the lack of a safety grip on the Hellcat, as well as the lack of a swivel loaded chamber indicator found on the XD.
The Hellcat also comes with an extended 13-round magazine that gives a little more room for your hand and more ammo.
This fact was noted in the press releases accompanying the pistol, with a letter from Springfield Armory CEO Dennis Reese stating that the Hellcat "...is the first step in a new direction for Springfield Armory polymer handguns..."
My test sample of the Hellcat was the OSP variant topped with the Shield RMSc red dot. I loaded several boxes of American Eagle 9mm 124-gr. FMJ, Black Hills 125 gr. Honey Badger and several other special defenses load through the Hellcat in the level and it doesn't even miss a beat.

How accurate is the Springfield Hellcat? Very accurate, as it turns out. I used to shoot 6 inch steel plates at 25 yards with the rifle. On getting closer, the groups were satisfactorily connected.
Although the gun is small and chambered in a "zippy" cartridge recoil-wise, I found the Hellcat to be very controllable.
Is it like shooting a full size, all metal 9mm 1911? No. But with its size and weight, the Hellcat is very handling and manoeuvrable.
As for sights, the U-Dot iron sights matched well with the mounted Shield optic, and I could easily see both the iron and the optic. However, I quickly transitioned to only using the red dot while shooting.

Mike tested the Hellcat with a variety of ammunition, from basic hardball to special defense ammunition. It burned it all without complaint.
Well, it is. Springfield's new Hellcat has made me rethink my long held belief that I only need to carry enough guns.
With its versatility, ability to accept a red-dot optic and all-around fun shooting style, the Hellcat offers the best of both worlds. So I definitely want to add one of these little shooters to my collection. And if you want the best CCW gun out there, I suggest you do the same.
