Air Show Charleston 2022 - NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Joint Base Charleston Air Expo is back this weekend for the first time in four years with capacity crowds and high-flying stunts and stunts galore.
A packed crowd packed the base Saturday for the display, which featured military aircraft past and present, as well as some aerial acrobatics.

Dozens of examples of military power were on display, including an A-10 Warthog, AC-130 Gunship, a Boeing DreamLifter and an F-35 fighter jet.

Men, women and children from the Lowcountry and as far away as Pennsylvania came to see airplanes from various historical periods fly over North Charleston.
These aircraft included World War II fighters, several aerobatic planes, C-17s that call Joint Base Charleston home, and the famous US Navy Blue Angels.
Lowcountry native John Surratt, who served six years in the military, was looking forward to seeing the Blue Angels fly.
"I've never seen the Blue Angels and that was the main reason I wanted to come here to see the Blue Angels," he said. “I've never seen them. I've heard of them, but I've never seen them in person, so today, I'll be here to see them in person."

The Navy's iconic Blue Angels flight demonstration team will take to the skies in North Charleston this weekend.
NORTH CHARLESTON - For the first time in four years, Joint Base Charleston is holding its own air show this weekend.
On April 9-10, flight demonstration teams, including the Navy's Blue Angels, will take to the skies above the base.
The iconic flight team was scheduled to perform in 2020, but the air show was canceled due to the pandemic. Since the show is not held every year, this will be Joint Base Charleston's first since 2018.

The event is free, but parking permits must be reserved in advance — a new policy this year that is a result of the area's growth, according to the base.
"The city grew and the base didn't," said Lt. Col. Mark Jones, director of the Air Expo.
That was a "lesson learned" in 2018, he said, when some cars had to wait in line for hours at the base's narrow gates. By issuing parking passes, which are also free, attendance should be spread evenly between the two days of the show, and pass holders will know in advance that they will be guaranteed entry and a parking spot.
The new system is intended to create a "more enjoyable experience for all participants," the base said on the Air Expo website.

Permits are required per vehicle, not per person, but are mandatory for each car, even if one has regular access to parking on base. Parking permits will be valid for one day - Saturday or Sunday - and one permit per vehicle is allowed. Arriving at the fair via ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft is "strongly discouraged," and there will be no designated area for drivers to pick up riders.

The base issues up to 10,000 parking permits per day. About 60 percent of the available permits have been claimed so far, Jones said, and the base expects to hold all of them, with Saturday permits running out first, likely by Thursday. About 60,000 spectators will attend the air show on Saturday and Sunday combined, Jones said.

Military families are invited to come to the base on April 8. The full air show will be on display, but the base will not be open to the public. No parking permits will be required that day and there will be less traffic to contend with, so these families are strongly encouraged to attend on Friday.
The air show doesn't start until noon, but aviation enthusiasts will be lining up during the opening hours in the morning, Jones said, to see the 24 or so planes that will be on display at the field. They will include historic aircraft, such as a C-47 from World War II, and new ones, such as a KC-46 refueling aircraft.
A C-17, which flies military and humanitarian missions around the world from Joint Base Charleston, will also be on display. The C-17's cargo bay will have posters explaining some of the past operations it was a part of at Joint Base Charleston, Jones said.
There will also be circulations and a children's area, and the base has cleared an entire shed for STEM-related displays. Exhibitors will include Boeing Co., NASA, the nonprofit Water Mission and Charleston County Schools, Jones said. The STEM hangar will be set up all weekend for Air Expo visitors, and many school groups will come to the base on Friday for field trips to see it.

There will be a C-17 demonstration, and the Demo Viper team based at Shaw Air Force Base near Columbia, which just had its first air show in six years April 2-3, will perform.
"Dogfights" complete with fireworks will take place between a P-51 fighter jet and a German FW-190 fighter jet, as well as a DH-115 Vampire fighter and a Soviet MiG-17 jet.
Because their 2020 appearance was canceled due to COVID-19, this weekend's appearance by the Blue Angels will be the group's first at Joint Base Charleston since 2010. Jones said they will perform each day for about an hour.

There is no mask mandate, vaccine requirement or negative COVID-19 testing policy for primarily outdoor events. The hangar doors will be left open to increase ventilation in the STEM display area.
Seating is not provided at the show, so spectators are encouraged to bring their own, including camping chairs and blankets.
